Bipartisan group of Kentucky senators introduces bill to ban female genital mutilation

(Louisville Courier Journal) Eleven Kentucky senators introduced a bill last week that would make female genital mutilation, or FGM, a felony offense.

Eight Republicans and three Democrats are sponsoring Senate Bill 72, which also advises making law enforcement officers undergo training about FGM, making the Kentucky Department for Public Health to make available education materials about FGM and opening up a 10-year window for victims of FGM to sue.

The main sponsor, Sen. Julie Raque Adams, a Louisville Republican and the majority caucus chair, wrote a joint op-ed in the Courier Journal last September that said, “Like all manner of sins, female genital mutilation flourishes in the dark. Bringing this child abuse into the light is the only way to end it.”
