Authorities charge West Haven man with attempting to support ISIS

(Hartford Courant) Federal authorities said Monday they charged a 22-year-old U.S. citizen from West Haven with attempting to provide support to terrorists by trying to travel to Syria and fight for ISIS.

Ahmad Khalil Elshazly was arrested and is in federal custody after spending more than a year trying to arrange travel to the Middle East in near continuous conversation with at least four informants working for the federal Department of Homeland Security.

The four informants, working together, convinced Elshazly that they had arranged for him to be transported to a fishing boat that would take him to a container ship, on which he would work for passage to Turkey. He was led to believe that, in Turkey, one of the informants would meet him and take him to Syria, where he could join the forces of the Islamic State.
