Melbourne terror plotter reveals brother’s death made him renounce IS

(Age) A failed Melbourne terrorist says the death of his terrorist brother in the Bourke Street attack was the “icing on the cake” in realising his plan to kill innocent people at Federation Square was wrong all along.

New Year’s Eve terror plotter Ali Khalif Shire Ali took to the stand in the Supreme Court on Thursday, where he made a full confession to his crimes before renouncing his support for Islamic State.

The 22-year-old, who was arrested in 2017 after repeatedly meeting with undercover Australian Federal Police officers posing as potential gun dealers, told the court that it was Islamic State’s fault that his older brother Hassan Khalif Shire Ali became a terrorist.
