(WZTV) On the anniversary of the murder of Heather Heyer during a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville two years ago, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is calling for the removal of Confederate symbols in public spaces nationwide.
CAIR is calling on Americans to contact state officials asking for the removal of any government monuments and symbols celebrating the Confederacy.
In a statement release, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad states, “Confederate symbols glorifying white supremacy and treason are a stain on our nation’s past and present that must be removed if we are to move forward as a just society in which people of all faiths and backgrounds have equal rights and dignity.”
