(Dallas Morning News) A Dallas man accused of joining the Islamic State when he was a teenager has been extradited from Syria to stand trial.
Omer Kuzu, now 23, made his first court appearance in the Northern District of Texas on Thursday. He faces one count of providing material support to a terrorist organization, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
Federal officials say Kuzu and his brother traveled from Houston to Istanbul to join the Islamic State in October 2014.
An FBI investigator detailed evidence against Kuzu from as early as April 2011, when he said Kuzu emailed a family member copies of books written by Abdullah Azzam, who co-founded Hamas and mentored Osama bin Laden. Other emails detailed his interest in martyrdom and the caliphate, according to documents filed in federal court.
