Sydney man’s views ‘more extreme than IS’

(AAP) A Sydney man who planned to fight for Islamic State overseas got cold feet because his views were even more extreme than the terrorist group’s, a court has heard.

Amin Elmir, 29, pleaded guilty in February to preparing to travel from Turkey to Syria for the purpose of engaging in hostile activities for IS between April and June 2016.

The Australian citizen, from Bass Hill, stayed in an IS safe house in Turkey, obtained military equipment and sought the assistance of others to help him make contact with people connected to IS, the agreed facts state.

But Elmir did not cross the border and was detained by Turkish authorities before his father brought him home on an emergency passport.
