School’s launch points to increased demand for Islamic education in New Zealand

(Stuff) Up a long flight stairs in an industrial part of west Auckland, a group of school children from 32 different countries celebrated the opening of their new school on Wednesday.

Iqra Elementary School is a private Islamic school located atop a Work and Income office in New Lynn.

Opened in Mt Roskill in 2016, it began with just one classroom and 15 students.

But this week, a [roll] of 110 watched excitedly as Governor General Patsy Reddy officially opened the new premises across town.

“From 10 families to 80 families. From one classroom to five classes. From two teachers to a staff of ten. We have made so much progress,” principal Fatima Zahid said as she addressed the packed room.
