(CBC) The secularism debate in Quebec has been going on for more than a decade, and much has been made of the importance of keeping religious symbols out of the workplace.

A new documentary, The Trial 2.0, focuses on the impact of the 2013 Charter of Values launched by the Parti Québécois government to ban public employees from wearing symbols of their faith.

The Charter of Values was never passed into law, but the current Coalition Avenir Québec government has carried on the charge with Bill 21, which would ban public employees in positions of authority from wearing religious symbols.

Filmmaker Nadia Zouaoui chronicles the social division this debate has highlighted, especially within the Quebec feminist movements.
