‘Tinnie terror’ leader eyes 2021 release

(AAP) The Melbourne ringleader of a terror plot who encouraged others to join him sailing from Queensland to help overthrow the Philippines government has been jailed for up to seven years.

Islamic State sympathiser Robert “Musa” Cerantonio shared his “putrid views” with five other men and over several months in 2015 and 2016 they formulated what was dubbed the “tinnie terror” plot to install Sharia law overseas.

Cerantonio, 34, pleaded guilty to engaging in conduct in preparation for hostile activities.

Supreme Court Justice Michael Croucher on Friday ordered him to serve at least five years and three months in prison before being eligible for release on parole.

He has already spent almost three years in custody and the judge wants to see him released quickly, believing early release will foster rehabilitation.
