Imams act to stop radicalisation as terror plotters’ Swinburne link revealed

(Age) Victoria’s Islamic leaders are dispatching moderate preachers to universities as it emerges a suspected ringleader in Sri Lanka’s Easter Sunday terror attack studied at the same Melbourne university as two other terrorists.

Sri Lankan suicide bomber Abdul Lathief Jameel Mohamed was enrolled at Swinburne University around the same time as a home-grown 2016 Christmas Day terror plotter and a captured Islamic State recruit.

A fourth man charged with conspiracy to commit a terrorist act, whose name cannot be reported, studied at Swinburne a few years later.

The link has raised fears that mainstream campuses are hotbeds for terrorist recruiting.

The Victorian Board of Imams hopes its new plan will weed out rogue radicals they fear are preying on impressionable students at university campuses.
