Muslim chaplain: Death row inmate needs imam at execution

(AL.com) The volunteer Muslim chaplain for a death row inmate set for execution next week said that there are prayers required of a Muslim before he dies, and that the inmate needs his assistance to die honoring his faith.

“I know the things that are required of Muslims before they die,” said Yusef Maisonet, imam of Masjid As Salaam in Mobile. “We want to make sure his last words are, ‘There is no God but God, and Muhammad is his prophet.’”

A Christian chaplain and other prison staff may violate the man’s right to die in accordance with his faith, Maisonet said.

“If they exclude me, they may ask him something and ask him to reply and those won’t be his last words,” Maisonet said.
