(AL.com) A federal judge in Montgomery said he will issue a written order Friday in a case involving Alabama death row inmate Domineque Ray, who has sought to stop his execution because his Muslim spiritual adviser is not being allowed to join him in the death chamber.
Ray, 42, is scheduled for execution on Feb. 7 for the 1995 killing, rape, and robbery of 15-year-old Tiffany Harville in Dallas County.
In a lawsuit filed Monday, Ray’s lawyers claim the Alabama Department of Corrections is violating Ray’s religious freedom rights by denying his request to have an imam be with him when he is executed at Holman Prison. The lethal injection is scheduled for 6 p.m.
U.S. District Judge W. Keith Watkins held a hearing in the case today, questioning lawyers from both sides.
