(Norwalk Hour) A power struggle at the city’s only mosque has led to the attempted ousting of its president, a complaint of a death threat and a lawsuit in state Superior Court.
Al Madany Islamic Center’s board of directors is embroiled in a legal battle over leadership of the mosque, which opened in 2016 at 1 Union Park St. Those involved and their lawyers would not discuss the case, but court records and a police report shed light on the divisions.
A July 2018 lawsuit filed by Niloy Shah, Khan Khursheet, Vikar Vahora, Aamir Kadri, Sheikh Kemal Cecunjanin (all board members) and Al Madany Islamic Center of Norwalk pits the five-member majority group against fellow board members Azra Assadudin, Mushter Moin, Irfan Vahora and Khalid Belhabib. The suit alleges the minority group broke Al Madany’s bylaws by ousting Shah and the other plaintiffs after learning a month after Shah was elected president in June 2018 that he had a criminal history.
