(WWMT) A federal judge in Detroit dismissed charges against two Michigan doctors who performed female genital mutilation on several girls.
Attorneys for the doctors argue the procedures were religious rituals. The judge ruled the federal ban on female genital mutilation (FGM) unconstitutional.
He didn’t rule on the practice itself, but instead said the feds overstepped their bounds and that banning female genital mutilation should be up to the states.
State Senator Margaret O’Brien said, “Fortunately for Michigan, we have state laws. Judge said it wasn’t an interstate commerce issue, it was a state rights issue.”
