(Springfield Republican) Tahirah Amatul-Wadud, a Springfield Democrat running for the U.S. House of Representatives in Massachusetts’ 1st Congressional District, spoke out this week against an Islamophobic flier targeting her campaign that has been sent to residents across Western Massachusetts.
Amatul-Wadud, who will face off against U.S. Rep. Richard Neal in the Sept. 4 Democratic primary election, said she has heard from people inside and outside of the district who have received the two-sided mailer.
The flier, which has reportedly been sent to residents in Pittsfield, Springfield, Greenfield and Florence, features a drawing on one side that appears to depict Amatul-Wadud holding a sign stating “Islam has nothing to do with it” and “Islamophobe racist bigot.”
The other side contends “elites, leftists, Islamists and mass media are in alliance to keep you in the dark,” and questions Amatul-Wadud’s background as a Council on American-Islamic Relations Massachusetts board member.
