Lawmakers split on referendum to ban female genital mutilation in Maine

(WGME) A new effort to ban female genital mutilation on the state level has taken shape in Maine.

A political action committee has filed paperwork to begin the process of getting the question on the November ballot.

While FGM is illegal federally, Maine doesn’t have legislation to match that law.

Supporters say it’s needed to protect young girls, but Senator Mark Dion has previously said there are plenty of protections already in place.

“I’m a conservative about the criminal codes,” Dion said. “While I think we have an adequate code, some states do not have a model penal code like we do.”
