(Delaware News Journal) After several children in an Arabic summer camp were asked to leave a public pool, ostensibly for wearing cotton while swimming, Wilmington officials will review the city’s pool rules and their enforcement.
A meeting planned for Monday follows an apology from Mayor Mike Purzycki Saturday night in which he said the city “used poor judgment in assessing what happened and then how it reacted to the matter.”
The controversy stems from a June 25 incident in which the Foster Brown pool manager asked four children from the Darul-Amaanah Academy to exit the pool because they were wearing cotton, according to camp owner Tahsiyn A. Ismaa’eel.
There is no language in city or state regulations prohibiting cotton in public pools. A mother of one of the children said she saw other swimmers wearing cotton, but they were not asked to leave the pool.
